Starting your own business and picking the right niche in no time

The second part in the 2016 APU & NAEP Webinar Series will focus on Effective Community Engagement. Speakers will address all aspects of community engagement starting in the classroom and moving through application in the business world. From the student focus relating community engagement and your career success to those already working in the environmental field, speakers will discuss how public engagement is part of policy and regulation and must be part of best professional practices. Speakers will reflect on lessons learned from the public when they have an interest or are impacted by environmental projects. There will also be a section on tips and techniques for in person meetings and online venues to include some of the more practical day-to-day components of community engagement.

 

Our panel of experts will guide you through tips and examples of best practices for effective community engagement including:

Speakers

Christine Chin Choy

Dr. Christine Chin Choy has been an instructor in the Environmental Science Program of American Public University for seven years. Her courses include Fundamentals of Environmental Systems, Environmental Economics, Soil Science, and Environmental Ethics. She also teaches introductory chemistry courses at Montgomery College and Howard Community College in Maryland.


Prior to her career as an instructor, Dr. Chin Choy was an environmental engineering consultant in the New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut metro area. Her focus was on obtaining permits for, and the implementation of, soil and groundwater treatment and disposal. Her projects primarily supported privately owned property developments. In addition, she assisted with the planning and construction of several deep well installations for geothermal projects in New York City.


Dr. Chin Choy holds her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey. Her research focused on the removal of depleted uranium from Department of Defense contaminated soils and groundwater. Through these experiences, she learned a great deal about the importance of interactions with professional and academic communities. These networks influence and motivate students to succeed in their programs and advance their career skills.

David S. Mattern

 MA Geography, BA Geography


With over 30 years of experience, David S. Mattern serves as senior manager conducting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) projects, and similar missions. His responsibilities include managing environmental impact statement preparation, and conducting siting studies and policy evaluations for public facilities.

 

Mr. Mattern managed Washington State’s first reader-friendly EIS, using innovative graphic design and clear writing to produce an easy-to-understand and engaging document. The document won four awards for its pioneering approach. He is knowledgeable in regulatory procedures and guidance for environmental studies and documentation, including processes for integrating NEPA, Section 106, Shoreline Management Act, Clean Water Act, Environmental Justice, and other legislation.

 

His project experience includes siting studies and environmental documentation for highways, airports, landfills, and light rail systems. Mr. Mattern was a member of working groups sponsored by FHWA, AASHTO, and ACEC developing guidance on legal sufficiency and alternative formats for environmental documents. He taught the Duke University Environmental Leadership Program course on preparing and documenting environmental impact analyses.

Bruce Bodson

Bruce Bodson has been involved in environmental matters for over 35 years, as a scientist, consultant, attorney and academic. His scientific practice includes wetland delineation; permitting and mitigation; endangered species surveys and habitat protection; stream surveys and impact mitigation; and the preparation of various environmental impact analysis documents.

 
Mr. Bodson has extensive experience with the preparation of environmental impact statements, environmental assessment, and environmental impact documents for various foreign jurisdictions and financial institutions, such as the World Bank. Project types include natural gas transmission lines; power lines; wind energy facilities; energy plants (coal, gas, hydro, and nuclear); and mining and water resources development. He has managed projects in 35 states and seven foreign countries. 


As an environmental attorney and scientist in private practice, Mr. Bodson focuses on matters related to land and water conservation. He has extensive experience negotiating and drafting conservation easements for riparian corridor protection, defending easements, and creating mitigation projects that encourage stewardship of remaining aquatic resources. 


He has been involved in conservation nonprofit organizations in the Texas Gulf Coast region for over 20 years, and has served as a board member of the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory. Mr. Bodson currently serves as Vice Chair and Lands Committee Chair for the Bayou Land Conservancy, Chair of the Christmas Bay Foundation, and is a member of the board for the Bayou Preservation Association.


Mr. Bodson serves as adjunct faculty for Texas A&M University at Galveston, where he teaches Environmental Impact Analysis and Environmental Policy for the graduate program in Marine Resources Management. He earned his J.D. from South Texas College of Law; his M.S. in Environmental Science from University of Texas at Dallas; and his B.S. in Fisheries Biology from the University of Arizona at Tucson. He also performed post-doctoral studies in Environmental and Energy Law at the University of Houston Law Center.


He is an avid birder, kayaker and kayak racer, and is constantly exploring Texas bays and river systems.  He occasionally guides tours in the swamps and bayous of South Texas.
